Grades 1-4

These sessions contain formal material for each grade level. We use a basic catechetical text supplemented by appropriate videos, craft projects, prayer and service opportunities, seasonal celebrations, Lectionary-based activities, and large group. Each catechist will also supplement the curriculum by the way he or she shares faith stories with the students.

The most important faith formation is the informal that occurs daily in your home. Parents are expected to follow up each session with discussion and completion of needed homework. Family Lectionary-based activities (Promise, Good News, or Venture) will be provided to round out home-based activities. Classes run late September through early May. Sessions are held on Wednesdays at 6:30 – 8 p.m. Contact Carole Zempel at czempel@transfigurationmn.org with any questions, or to volunteer your time.

Mission Statement

The Faith Formation Ministry of Transfiguration Parish calls us to proclaim the Gospel and share the Catholic Faith in order that all are challenged to live a life of holiness committed to Jesus Christ.

Mission

In this Faith Community, we invite each person to actively participate in a variety of Faith Formation opportunities that are:

  • Christ-centered
  • Based on Scripture and Tradition
  • Rooted in Prayer and Worship
  • Demonstrated through Service and Outreach

Sacramental Preparation

First Reconciliation (Penance, Confession)
A preparation program for First Reconciliation is offered to help parents and children (usually second grade but may be older) integrate their understanding of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Parents come together several times for learning, prayer, and celebration, both with and without their children. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated in January. Please register on the form included in this mailing if your child attends Faith Formation. Additional information will be sent in the fall to families with children in grades two and above who have not received this Sacrament for the first time. (Transfiguration School children in grade 2 are automatically registered for this process).

First Communion
First Communion preparation is offered to those children (usually second grade but may be older) who are ready to celebrate Communion. Preparation will begin in October.

First Communion

Materials are provided to assist parents and children in preparing for Communion. Parents have several opportunities to gather for learning, prayer, and celebration, both with and without their children, in addition to the regular Faith Formation process. Please register on the form included in this mailing. Additional information will be sent in the fall to families with children in grade two and above who have not received this sacrament for the first time. Preparation for Reconciliation is in conjunction with preparation for Communion. (Transfiguration School children in grade 2 are automatically registered for this process).

Additional Opportunities

Children’s Liturgy of the Word for Children in Grade 1 and older
Children are invited to participate in CLW by the presider during the Liturgy of the Word at the 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses. The children hear the Word at an age-appropriate level through prayer, ritual and small group sharing of the Sunday readings. No registration is required.

Please note, this does not replace elementary faith formation. CLW is meant to supplement these programs.

CLW Spring Schedule

Vacation Bible School (VBS)
During VBS we explore one Bible story each day that fits the theme for the week. This experience is as fun as it is enriching for all participants, children (ages 4 as of September 1 through Grade 5), youth and adult leaders and assistants. VBS is typically held during the third week of June. Contact Carole Zempel at czempel@transfigurationmn.org with any questions, or to volunteer your time.
