Activities

Transfiguration Catholic School offers a wide range of enriching activities designed to further develop each child through a fostering of challenging activities within a fun and value-based environment. These activities include: 

Academic Triathlon
Grades 5-8
Activities are open to students in grades 5 through 8 in three different categories: Mind Sprints, P.A.R.T.Y. in a Box, and Face-Off! Teams of five students practice every other week before school and compete against other schools in four “Meets” per season.

Ashland Productions
Grades 1-5
Students learn to sing, dance, and perform under the direction of professional artistic directors and choreographers from Ashland Productions. Practices begin in late fall and take place after school. Performances are held in February on stage in the Maplewood Community Center performing arts theater. Students showcase their hard work with several performances for their school, family, friends and community with professional sets, costumes, lights and sound.

Band
Grades 4-8
Transfiguration Catholic School participates in the band program offered through the Hill Murray Band Program. Band students receive instrument lessons, participate in band rehearsals, and perform in the Christmas Concert and Spring Program. In addition, students have an opportunity to participate in an annual spring concert held at Hill-Murray School with other school band programs in the area.

Chess Club
Grades K-8
Students meet once a week before school to learn and improve their chess skills by playing games with one another and solving chess puzzles. Through the game of chess, students develop patience and thoughtfulness, learn how to think abstractly, weigh options, and improve concentration skills. Research shows that chess can improve students' math and reading test scores.

Youth Choir
Grades 3-8
All children from the parish in grades 3-8, are invited to participate in the Parish Youth Choir. The choir rehearses on Saturday mornings and ministers at designated parish liturgies throughout the year. Schedules for the liturgies and rehearsals are available in the fall. Students from Transfiguration School minister at all-school liturgies as well.

Drama Club
Grades 5-8
Students in grades 5–8 are encouraged to participate in the annual Drama Production. Rehearsals are held either before or after school. Students learn the basics of stage direction, props, costumes and make-up.

First Lego League
Grades 6-8
Students meet at least twice a week from August to December to participate in this team-based, hands-on program that provides challenging and exciting learning opportunities that spurs innovation, develops teamwork and leadership skills, and promotes excitement in science and technology.
 
Geography Bee               
Grades 4-8
Students compete in Transfiguration Catholic School's annual Geography Bee held in December. The winner may advance to the Minnesota Geography Bee.

Junior Achievement
Grades K-8
Junior Achievement is an enrichment opportunity provided during class time for grades K-8 that provides hands-on activities to teach age-appropriate financial literacy skills. Grades 6-8 combine classroom learning with simulated real-world experience at Junior Achievement's experiential learning lab in Maplewood.

Junior Great Books
Grades K-8
Junior Great Books is a language arts program that improves students’ achievement in reading, thinking, and communicating. Junior Great Books combines interpretive discussion and activities with children’s literature to help students of all abilities learn to read for meaning, think critically, engage in dynamic discussions, and synthesize ideas in writing. Students meet once a week for 9 to 12 sessions.

Math Enrichment
Grade 3
Students meet once a week before school January through May to play math enrichment games.

Spelling Bee
Grades 4-8
Students compete in Transfiguration Catholic School's annular Spelling Bee. The winner can move on to another competition if available.

Quiz Bowl
Grade 8
Quiz Bowl team practices once a week during school and competes in the 8th Grade Quiz Bowl at the University of St. Thomas. The team also competes against the Faculty in the annual Faculty/Student Quiz Bowl during Catholic Schools Week.

Scouts: Boys and Girls
Grade K-8
Girls in grades K-8 can participate in fun activities that help build leadership skills, strengthen values, make new friends, and discover the outdoors. Girls explore practical life skills including healthy living, cultural literacy, and even science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  

Boys in grades K-8 can participate in fun activities that teach responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities and educational programs. Scouting values such as trustworthiness and good citizenship are incorporated into all scouting activities.

Student Council
Grades 4-8
Student Council is made up of elected members from each grade. Meetings are held twice a month before school, and elected officers and representatives must be able to attend meetings. Officers and members also serve on various community committees, school committees and task forces. Student Council-sponsored activities include student donations to charitable organizations, student social activities, and the annual Talent Show.

Washington D.C. Tour
Grades 7-8
Every other year, 7th and 8th grade students have an opportunity to visit Washington D.C. to see and learn about our country’s history and how our nation's foundation was built on a strong faith in God. Some of the sites they will visit include famous monuments and memorials, National Archives, White House, United States Capital, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Ford's Theater, and the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This four day tour is coordinated through American Christian Tours.

Yearbook
Grade 8
Eighth grade students have the opportunity to help with the layout of the school yearbook under the guidance of a teacher advisory staff. Students work together to create collage photo pages, class pages, and an "Eighth Grade through the Years" page. Students are also involved in editing. Those wanting to participate in development of the yearbook will need to attend meetings either before or after school.

Young Authors Conference
Grades 6-8
The Young Authors Conference promotes student enthusiasm and competence in written communication. It focuses on the concept that students must be encouraged early in their academic lives if they are to become effective communicators. Through interaction with established authors, poets, playwrights, storytellers, illustrators, journalists and teachers of writing, students who attend this conference discover and explore their writing talents and potential. Students sign up to participate in a one day conference in May.
